Blue, Striped and Black Marlin tagged and released in one day's fishing on Unreel

A call from my friend Rob, skipper at Unreel Fishing Kenya, at 7pm on a Thursday night could only really be for one question, ‘do you want to come fishing tomorrow?’, a buzz of excitement and I was already juggling tomorrow’s schedule. I knew fishing off Watamu (on the North Kenya Coast) had been fantastic recently, and this was a great opportunity to head out Marlin fishing during peak season.

Ngalawa

One of the most common boats seen on The Swahili Coast, the Ngalawa is an unmistakable and charming traditional boat.

It’s slim hull approximately 6 metres long is essentially a dugout canoe or Mtumbwi, which is what this vessel most likely evolved from. The raised bow and higher sides to the hull allow for the Ngalawa to reach out into the open seas. A pointed stern holds the rudder.

Simple dugout canoe

Mtumbwi

Mtumbwi is the most basic of traditional boats found along The Swahili Coast. It is a simple dugout canoe, generally carved from a large coastal tree such as a mango tree.
These canoes vary in size generally 2 to 3 metres, and rarely up to 6 metres in length. The smaller dugouts have the Swahili name ‘hori’, and are used to move between shore and larger vessels at anchor.
Mtumbwi are usually propelled by a small wooden paddle (kafi) or punting pole.

Best times of year to head out Deep-Sea Fishing for billfish off the Kenya Coast

Billfish Season on the Kenya Coast

Deep-Sea Fishing, or Sport Fishing off the Kenya Coast is among the best in the world.

An array of billfish are found in the waters off the Kenya Coastincluding the Black MarlinBlue MarlinStriped MarlinSailfish,Broadbill Swordfish, and the rare Shortbill Spearfish.

Although fishing off the Kenya Coast is quality all year around - there are times of year when there are far more billfish off the coast. Being migratory animals the quantity of numbers increase at certain times of year.
