A call from my friend Rob, skipper at Unreel Fishing Kenya, at 7pm on a Thursday night could only really be for one question, ‘do you want to come fishing tomorrow?’, a buzz of excitement and I was already juggling tomorrow’s schedule. I knew fishing off Watamu (on the North Kenya Coast) had been fantastic recently, and this was a great opportunity to head out Marlin fishing during peak season.

Deepsea Fishing Competition - Hemingways Resort, Watamu

Friends of Kenya 2015

The 2015 Friends of Kenya billfish competition was held over the 3rd and 4th of March. The boat auction took place on the evening of the 2nd March at Hemingways Watamu.

The two day event gives fishermen the option of staying out at sea and fishing overnight, giving the opportunity for broadbill fishing in addition to the typical marlin and sailfish that the teams try to catch during the day.

The 2014 Wildman Watamu Triathlon took place over the 18th and 19th October at Turtle Bay Beach Club.

The kids triathlon was on the Saturday, whilst the adults Sprint and Olympic categories were raced on Sunday morning.

The 2014 September (southward) Equinox (Tuesday, 23rd September) - marks equal day and night over the equator. The closest point of the earth to the sun (the 'subsolar point') moves over the equator towards the southern hemisphere.

A transitional period of shifts in the mosnoon winds called 'Matalai' occurs from mid-September to mid-November where there is a period of rains and little wind between the switch from the southerly Kusi to the north easterly Kaskazi.

Watamu Beach Clean Up

A large number of the Watamu community came together to clean up rubbish that had washed ashore on Watamu Beach. 

By far the most numerous were school children, who spearheaded the effort.

It was a blustery and rainy morning, but despte the difficult conditions the kids enthusiatically set to the task, and kept filling sacks full of rubbish. In many cases, the rubbish bags were larger than the children filling them.

Tribe Watersports, based at Medina Palms in Watamu, offers a variety of watersports including kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, windsurfing, body boarding, and kite surfing.

For beginners, Tribe offer tuition, and have a team of instructors who assist with the equipment and expert advice on how to get started. They offer a range of tuition packages for all the watersports they offer.

WSFC Fishing Competition - Day 2

Seahorse managed to remain ahead of the fleet overnight in Watamu, having entered day 2 with the most points from 3 Striped Marlin on Day 1. Skipper Peter Ready and the fishermen and crew on board Seahorse caught another Marlin on the final day, and ended with a total points tally of 916.71 to win 1st Overall.

Insteada was hot on their heals with a succesful second day, but fell just short at 916.43 points, a very slim margin which came down to the weigh in of the Dorado caught in addition to the high socring billfish.
