Malindi began as a Swahili settlement in the 14th century. Many remnants of Malindi's colourful past still can be seen. Malindi is a melting pot of ancient and modern, and an important town in terms of local economy, and international tourism.

The capital of Malindi District, Malindi town plays an important administrative and governmental role, as well as an ecomonic hub for business and trade.

It is also a very popular tourist destination, with numerous resorts, restaurants, markets and a host of activities for holiday makers visiting the region.

In addition to historical and cultural attractions Malindi has a variety of popular beaches and other marine highlights such as the Malindi Marine National Park & Reserve as well as providing an excellent base for deep-sea sports fishing.
