Funzi Island
Funzi Island is located 70 kilomteres south of Mombasa, a couple of kilometres or so out to sea off the coast from the small village of Bodo.
Bodo provides the main gateway to Funzi Island. There is a small jetty here - where boats arrive and depart with passengers and supplies for the island.
Funzi Island is mostly fringed with mangrove forests - and numerous inlets and small creeks into the magroves provide for glassy calm waters, and brilliant opportunities for creek fishing and bird watching.
At low tide, a number of specatucular sand banks emerge from the ocean around Funzi - providing a play ground for a few hours until the ocean rises and washes away all trace of visitors.
The island is also close to the Pemba Channel - one of Kenya's best areas for deep-sea fishing areas.
The mouth of the Ramisi River is also not far from Funzi Island - and a boat trip up the estuary makes for an excellent excursion.
