Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park

Immediately south east of Wasini Island is the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine National Park which covers 40 kilometres squared, and contains three small islands: Mpunguti ya Juu, Mpunguti ya Chini and Liwe la Jahazi, and the slightly larger Kisite Island.

Kisite Island, which lies 8 kilometres from the coastline - an important island as it is a breeding ground for the migratory Roseate and Sooty Terns. Its protected status within the part is vital, as numbers of breeding terns had reduced greatly due to being raided prior to the area being made a marine National Park.
