Mombasa

Mombasa is Kenya's second largest city after Nairobi, although it reaches far further back into history. Mombasa is also known as Mvita - or 'Island of War' due to it's turbulent and often violent past.
The small island of Mombasa is the core of the city. Providing a natural harbour to vessels for centuries, the island increased in significance as the trade routes along the East African coast became busier. The city has spread from the island across to the mainland to the south, west, and north.
An intriguing coastal city steeped in history and at the heart of Kenya's coast, Mombasa also plays a vital role in Kenya's economy.
