Governor Awards Tearful Student Full Scholarship

Machakos Governor, Wavinya Ndeti on Wednesday awarded a scholarship to a university student who had reached out to her for assistance. 

During a bursary disbursement event in Matungulu East, the Governor invited the student to provide her account details along with the precise amount required.

According to the student, set to embark on her academic journey at Maasai Mara University, her annual school fees amounted to Ksh102,000. The intervention by Governor Wavinya is expected to go a long way in alleviating her financial burden.

“Why are you crying? You asked for my help and I will personally take up your school fees for the four years,” Governor Wavinya declared.

Governor Wavinya further encouraged the student to strive for excellence in her studies and advised her to maintain an open line of communication by sharing her academic progress throughout the duration of her course.

“Do not let me down, I will be your first parent and I need you to be disciplined,” she stated.

The county chief underscored her administration’s commitment to alleviating the challenges faced by parents, particularly in the prevailing economic difficulties.

Machakos residents lauded her action, expressing their concerns about the exorbitant cost of education which has strained household budgets.

In response to these concerns, the national government has assured parents that it will not hike school fees. 

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Wednesday that any principal found effecting increases, contrary to the directive will be subjected to disciplinary action. 

In pursuit of equitable educational funding, particularly within universities, the government on July 31, a new funding framework. 

The model classifies applicants into four distinct groups: vulnerable, less vulnerable, needy, and less needy. The purpose of this categorisation is to ensure fair distribution of funds, thereby ensuring no Kenyan learner is locked out.
