Mombasa Governor Orders Release of Stranded Patients With Huge Hospital Bills

Mombasa County Governor Abdulswamad Sherrif Nassir has ordered the release of patients withheld in County government hospitals over pending bills.

Speaking at the Coast General Hospital on Tuesday, December 12, Nassir noted that a total of 46 patients would be released from the Coast General Hospital after his directive.

He also directed the Department of Health to ensure that the released patients are offered NHIF coverage with immediate effect and their details recorded prior to them being discharged.

In his speech, Abdulswamad urged MCAs in the region to visit remote hospitals in their areas and ensure that all patients who were held back in the hospitals over financial arrears would be released.

He particularly emphasised that patients in the remote areas should also be beneficiaries of the pardoning, mentioning Port Reiz, Chuda, Mrima and Likoni Sub County hospitals.

Thereafter, he instructed mortuaries to release dead bodies withheld over financial issues to allow their families to bury them and mourn in peace.

Abdulswamad issued the directives after releasing inmates who had been convicted over minor offences at Jela Baridi, Shimo la Tewa and Annex prisons.

According to the Governor, his government has been providing medical coverage to inmates in the county, who were serving more than one-year terms.

“For the past 3 months, my administration has provided NHIF medical cover under #MombasaCare to prisoners serving sentences of more than one year, and over and above that.

“I have directed the Department of Health to set up a methadone program here in Kingorani to reduce recidivism arising from drug abuse,” Abdulswamad announced, adding that addiction was one of the leading factors contributing to a high crime rate in Mombasa.

Abdulswamad was accompanied by Members of Parliament, Bady Twalib of Jomvu, and Juma Bezimba of Kisauni Constituency, and over 20 MCAs in his prison tours.
