DP Gachagua Wins 100 Metre Race Despite Falling Metres to Finish Line


Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Sunday, January 7, suffered a slight fall during a 100-metre race in Tinderet, Nandi County. 

Gachagua was leading in the Tinderet Barngetuny Mountain Run when he slipped and fell two metres just shy of the finish line. 

Security officers and other dignitaries participating in the event quickly rushed to the DP’s rescue. 

He went on to win the 100-metre race after clocking 59 seconds.

The DP was followed closed by Head of Public Service Felix Koskei who clocked second in the race. 

The fall was minor as the Deputy President did not suffer any visible injury and was all smiles after winning the race. 

“Kenya is teeming with talented, world-beating athletes to be tapped and nurtured to reap big from their talents,” Gachagua had stated moments before the race. 

Tinderet Barngetuny Mountain Run National Championship in Nandi County was attended by thousands of runners and sports enthusiasts across the country. 

Gachagua noted that it was a great initiative to nurture talents in the region describing Nandi as Home of Champions.

Other leaders who participated in the race include;  Nandi Governor Stephen Sang, Deputy Governor Yulita Mitei, Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei, and Sports Principal Secretary Peter Tum. 

Parliamentarians who graced the event were; Julius Melly (Tinderet), Maryanne Kitany (Aldai), Abraham Kirwa ( Mosop), Josses Lelmengit (Emgwen), Bernard Kitur (Nandi Hills), Paul Biego, (Chesumei), Hillary Kosgei (Kipkelion West), Joseph Cherorot (Kipkelion East), and Zipporah Kering (EALA).
