CS Murkomen Appoints Duale’s Brother After Ruto Revokes Appointment

Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has picked Defence CS Aden Duale’s brother, Abdi Bare Duale, to chair the Kenya Railways Corporation board.

In a Gazette Notice issued on Friday, Abdi will serve for three years beginning February 9, 2024.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4(a) of the Kenya Railway Corporation Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Roads and Transport appoints Abdi Bare Duale to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Railways Corporation, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024,” the notice read in part.

In the notice, President William Ruto revoked Bare’s appointment as Kenya Electricity Transmission Company (Ketraco) board chair, a year after he received the appointment.

Abdi Bare Duale takes Oath of Office as a member of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) in July 2017.

Muhumed Abdi Mohamed was appointed to replace him for three years.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by paragraph 3 (a) of the Articles of Association of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, and section 6 (1) (a) of the State Corporations Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoints Muhumed Abdi Mohamed to be the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited, for three (3) years, with effect from February 9, 2024.

“The appointment of Abdi Bare Duale is revoked,” the notice read in part.

Abdi has served at the helm of several boards in both Ruto and retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s regimes.

In June 2017, he was picked by former Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to serve on the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) board for three years. His appointment was, however, short-lived after Uhuru revoked his appointment a year later.

Abdi was subsequently transferred to the Kenya Leather Development Council to serve as the board’s chair. He has also previously served as a board member of the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

Duale’s brother holds a Masters in International Trade from Edith Cowan University in Australia.

In other appointments, Education CS Ezekiel Machogu appointed Hawo Shanko as a member of the Council of the North Eastern National Polytechnic for three years.

On the other hand, Dr Yussuf Adan was appointed by Tourism CS Alfred Mutua to serve as a member of the Board of Directors of the Wildlife Research and Training Institute.
