Property Worth Ksh10M Destroyed as Fire Breaks Out at Nyakoiba Mixed Secondary School

Learning was disrupted at Nyakoiba Mixed Secondary School in Kisii County after a fire razed two dormitories on Friday.

Preliminary reports suggest that the fire broke out a few minutes past 5 am, but the cause is yet to be established.

Residents living in nearby areas promptly responded and assisted in containing the fire, while the school administration awaited the arrival of county firefighters, who arrived minutes later to extinguish it.

Speaking to journalists, the school’s administration revealed that property worth Ksh10 million was destroyed in the fire, with the bulk of it being students’ belongings.

The firefighters eventually contained the fire and evacuated the students to safety.

No injuries or casualties were reported from the incident.

Confirming the incident, Kisii County Commissioner Tom Anjere raised concerns about the rising cases of fires and called for collaboration to curb future incidents.

“Boarding masters and school prefects should also be given training in fire breaks out to avoid future incidents,” Anjere stated

The multi-agency team present at the scene, called on the school management and multiple stakeholders to invest in fire fighting equipment citing that a fast response could have stopped the dormitories from being brought down by the fire.

Meanwhile, the Member of the County Assembly of Bosoti ward, Peter Okerio, vowed to push Kisii Governor Simba Arati to deploy firefighting amenities in each sub-county for quick-fire responses.

“I will push the matter in the county assembly, so we have a quick response to fire and avoid losses,” Okerio stated.

This comes just four days after schools reopened.
